Shocking discovery in Greece: new light on Agamemnon’s reign. The three ancient swords.
July 30, 2022A glamour of authenticity and simplicity with the aroma of jasmine, vines and bougainvillaea, envelops a corner of Athens that nothing resembles the cement that surrounds it.
A dusty story…
Which starts in the middle of the 19th century. It was then that King Otto, anticipating the rebuilding of the palaces (today's Parliament), brought the famous craftsmen to Athens from Santorini and Anafi. These people, wanting to be housed somewhere with their families, chose a small corner to the northeast of the Acropolis rock, since, as it is called, it reminded them of their place. Thus, a Lilliputian quarter was built simply and quietly in the centre of the city with an Aegean flavour and Cycladic architecture. Anafiotika. White houses, narrow alleys, bougainvillaea and vines compose a painting under the sacred rock that withstands a city drowned in cement.

With "boat" the metro...
Perhaps it is the only "island" where you will not need a boat or ferry tickets. You will just need a ticket for the metro… Stop at the “Acropolis” station and walk down Lysikratous Street (near the pillars of Olympian Zeus), from the Lysikratos Monument continue to Shelley Street. With your love of exploration as your guide and luggage with a camera, travel through the island within the city feeling the breeze of the Aegean and the smell of another era.

Coffee on the steps...
In addition to the whitewashed alleys, the green basilicas and the flowerpots in the courtyards of the houses in the district, your eye will be drawn to the beautiful cafes with colourful straw chairs and ethnic pillows on the steps that are there and these, in turn, decorate the neighbourhood. Don't resist a Greek coffee, tea or a dessert of the spoon (tomato, peach, bergamot, grape) . This will also contribute to a good mood during your trip to the city island. Each balcony has a different view...
After your walk in Anafiotika, finish your walk enjoying their divine view. Even if your mind is on some Cycladic island overlooking the Aegean and your senses refuse to return to the reality of the city, return to it again and smoothly in one way. Maybe the best way...
